Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has issued a warning to travelers following a rise in credit card theft during flights, with more than 80 cases reported and total losses exceeding THB 8 million. Most incidents have occurred on short-haul international routes of less than three hours, based on data compiled from 18 financial institutions.

Pol.Col.Pongthorn Pongratchatanan Deputy Commander of Immigration Division 2, said authorities are implementing preventive measures based on the “Crime Triangle” framework—targeting the reduction of opportunities for crime. These include proactive awareness campaigns across digital platforms and airports, as well as coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand and airlines to strengthen onboard monitoring and passenger alerts.
Passengers are advised to keep valuables within sight at all times and regularly check their belongings during flights.
Opportunistic Theft During Flights
Mr. Rywin Voravongsatit, President of the Credit Card Fraud Prevention Club and Head of Operations Control & Merchant Service, at Krungthai Card Public Company Limited (KTC), said most cases involve opportunistic theft while passengers are asleep or inattentive. Cards are typically taken from overhead compartments—often not directly above the owner’s seat—and used for mobile transactions shortly after landing.
“These cases are generally classified as ‘lost card’ incidents, as the card is no longer in the cardholder’s possession at the time of transaction,” he said. “While digital payments offer speed and convenience, they also increase exposure to fraud if proper safeguards are not in place.”
Risk in a Cashless Environment
The trend reflects broader growth in cashless payments, where faster transaction capabilities can also amplify risk—particularly in situations where cardholders are unable to closely monitor their belongings, such as during travel.
KTC’s Recommendations for Cardholders
To reduce risk, KTC advises cardholders to:
- Keep cards with you at all times; avoid storing them in overhead compartments
- Use mobile app features such as temporary card blocking and spending controls
- Enable real-time transaction alerts to monitor activity instantly
- Notify your bank of travel plans in advance to enhance fraud detection
KTC emphasized that effective protection relies on both user vigilance and the proactive use of financial tools, helping ensure a safer and more secure travel experience.
