the Exhibition Bridges Thailand’s Modern Masters and Contemporary Artists Through a Continuing Legacy of Inspiration 16 October 2026 – 31 January 2027 Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok ART Space by MOCA BANGKOK

Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok ART Space by MOCA BANGKOK BANGKOK, THAILAND — Art is never created in isolation. Every generation draws from what came before, reinterpreting inherited ideas through new perspectives, experiences, and cultural influences. This enduring exchange lies at the heart of “Continuum” a new exhibition presented by Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok ART Space by MOCA BANGKOK in celebration of its sixth anniversary.
Bringing together seminal works by Thailand’s modern masters and newly created pieces by contemporary artists, the exhibition explores how artistic ideas transcend generations, evolve over time, and continue to shape Thailand’s cultural identity. On view from 16 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, Continuum invites visitors to experience Thai art not as a succession of distinct eras, but as an ongoing conversation between past and present.
At the centre of the exhibition are works by 7 influential figures in Thai modern art — Pratuang Emjaroen, Thawan Duchanee, Sompong Adulyasaraphan, Ithipol Thangchalok, Suchao Sisganes, Praphan Srisouta, and Chalermchai Kositpipat — drawn from the collection of MOCA BANGKOK.
Their works serve as creative starting points for 14 contemporary artists, all of whom have previously exhibited at Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok ART Space by MOCA BANGKOK. Invited to revisit and respond to the artistic legacies of their predecessors, these artists have developed new works that reflect their individual perspectives, experiences, and creative languages.
Rather than simply paying homage to the masters, the exhibition encourages a more dynamic exchange, one in which established ideas are questioned, familiar visual languages are reimagined, and artistic traditions become fertile ground for new interpretations.
Beyond this intergenerational dialogue, “Continuum: สายศิลป์” offers a compelling perspective on the evolution of Thai modern art itself. Emerging through encounters with Western modernist ideas, techniques, and artistic philosophies, Thai modern art gradually developed a distinctive visual language as artists began to incorporate their own cultural heritage, spiritual beliefs, social experiences, and imagination.
The resulting works reveal an artistic landscape shaped by both continuity and transformation, where tradition encounters modernity, spirituality coexists with material reality, and local identity engages with the wider world. Seen through this lens, the MOCA BANGKOK collection is more than a record of artistic development; it is a reflection of Thailand’s evolving cultural consciousness.
Perhaps the exhibition’s most intriguing proposition is its exploration of what it means for art to be distinctly Thai.
Rather than treating Thainess as a fixed aesthetic or a set of recognisable cultural symbols, Continuum presents identity as something fluid, layered, and continuously redefined. Expressions of Thai culture may emerge through Buddhist iconography, mythology, ritual, nature, and fantastical creatures, yet they can just as readily take shape through pop culture, street art, technology, and contemporary visual experimentation.
These seemingly contrasting approaches are not presented as opposing forces, but as part of the same evolving artistic narrative. In doing so, the exhibition moves beyond conventional representations of Thai identity, suggesting that cultural heritage remains most relevant when it is open to reinterpretation, reinvention, and dialogue with the present.
Marking the 21st exhibition at Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok ART Space by MOCA BANGKOK, Continuum also represents a significant milestone in the space’s six-year journey as a platform for artistic exchange and cultural discovery.
More than an anniversary exhibition, it celebrates the enduring relationship between artists across generations, the creative possibilities that emerge when past and present intersect, and the capacity of art to reflect a society in constant transformation.
Ultimately, “Continuum” reminds us that artistic heritage is not simply something to preserve, but something to engage with, challenge, and carry forward. It is in this continuous exchange that new artistic expressions emerge — and where the next chapter of Thai art begins.
