Stopping Scams, Safeguarding Rights…True Joins Forces with Government to Combat Call & SMS Fraud with a Balance of Security and Privacy for Customers

Amid increasingly sophisticated call and SMS scam threats, True Corporation is advancing an integrated approach to mitigation, combining network-level detection capabilities with close collaboration with government authorities. The company underscores a clear principle “Preventing threats must not come at the expense of user rights”. By maintaining a careful balance between security and data privacy, True aims to build long-term trust in the digital ecosystem. On this occasion, Mr. Montri Stapornkul, Head of Data Privacy Division at True Corporation Plc., shared perspectives and operational approaches to data protection, reinforcing the commitment of a Thai telecom-tech company that places “trust” at the core of every service. His remarks were delivered during the panel discussion “From Detection to Protection: Thailand’s Model for Combating Call and SMS Scams”, held as part of the IIC Thailand Chapter, organized by the Office of the NBTC.

“Trust” as the Foundation of Digital Services and Ecosystem Collaboration

“Trust” is the foundation of every experience in the digital world. Protecting personal data is therefore not only a legal obligation, but also a responsibility to users and society.
Mr. Montri stated, “Today, the role of service providers goes beyond delivering services. It extends to safeguarding the digital society through technology, governance, and collaboration across all sectors.”

Over the past year, True has worked closely with government agencies and law enforcement, supporting more than 70,000 data requests through clearly defined processes to ensure that any access is lawful, necessary, and strictly within scope, while upholding user rights as a core principle, reflecting the belief that digital security requires coordinated ecosystem-wide collaboration to build long-term trust.

Clear Legal Frameworks Empower Collaboration and Ensure Accountability

Clear legal frameworks, particularly the Emergency Decree on Measures for the Prevention and Suppression of Technological Crime, play a critical role in strengthening collaboration between telecom operators and the public sector. “Regulatory clarity enables operators to support law enforcement more effectively under lawful conditions both in terms of data access and necessary investigative actions, while remaining firmly within boundaries that respect user rights,” Mr. Montri added.

At the same time, operating within transparent and auditable frameworks is essential to maintaining the balance between security and data privacy, one of the most critical challenges in today’s digital landscape.

From Detection to Protection: Preventing Harm Before It Happens

True is evolving its role from reactive response to proactive prevention by strengthening network-level capabilities to detect suspicious activities at the source, supported by enhanced monitoring mechanisms to mitigate risks from scam communications such as call and SMS fraud. This marks a tangible shift from “detection” to proactive protection. At the same time, maintaining the balance between cybersecurity and user rights remains a key challenge, one that requires the combined strength of technology, governance, and transparency.

In an era where “data” lies at the heart of the digital economy, responsible data stewardship is a key determinant of long-term trust. “True Corporation is committed to becoming a Thai telecom-tech company that not only connects people, but also elevates comprehensive standards of personal data protection. Trust is not built by technology alone. It is built through the responsibility an organization upholds toward its users and society as a whole,” Mr. Montri concluded.
