Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Celebrates a Decade Above Ordinary with 10 Remarkable Mountain Experiences

A decade at 2,000 metres reveals a side of Oman where ancient villages endure, roses bloom, and extraordinary experiences thrive

Ten years ago, the idea of creating a luxury resort 2,000 metres above sea level, perched on the edge of Oman’s great canyons, may have sounded almost impossible. A decade later, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort continues to offer guests an experience found nowhere else in Oman.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the hotel invites travellers to journey into the traditions and experiences that have been cultivated over a decade with the “10 Years Above Ordinary” special.

Each spring, from March to May, Damask roses open across the mountainside, their delicate petals gathered in the cool early hours before being distilled into Omani rose water. The harvest remains an important seasonal event, where visitors meet local farmers and immerse themselves in the story of the rose through Anantara Spa encounters.

Further along Oman’s highlands, orchards produce pomegranates, peaches, walnuts, pears, tomatoes and grapes. The bounty forms part of a farming heritage that has sustained communities on the Green Mountain for generations, with ingredients making their way from the picturesque tiered farms into local kitchens and onto the tables at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar.

The ancient falaj irrigation system carries spring water through the uplands, feeding farms and settlements along the way. At the resort, treated water is reused for irrigation and landscaped areas, continuing a careful approach to one of Earth’s most precious resources.

Jabal Al Akhdar itself delivers a perspective unlike anywhere else in Oman. The canyon falls up to 1,000 metres at its deepest point, while the high-altitude climate can bring temperatures up to 15°C cooler than capitals across the Middle East during summer. In winter, crisp air and exceptionally cold nights transform the landscape once again.

Al Aqr, Al Ayn and Ash Shirayjah sit among the orchards and ancient irrigation channels, offering a glimpse into village life that has continued across generations. Through the Three Village Walk with a Mountain Insider, visitors follow old paths through the settlements and meet the stories of the people who live among them.

At Diana’s Point, guests can stand at the viewpoint named after the late Princess of Wales, who visited Al Jabal Al Akhdar in 1986, and watch the colour of ravine walls change in the sunset hues.

For a different view of the plateau, the Extreme Jabal Activity Wall takes adrenalin-seekers onto the rock face. The Via Ferrata rises across multiple levels before reaching a steel bridge suspended above the gorge, placing the Hajar Mountains beneath every step.

Ingredients grown across Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar feature in its restaurants, while Spice Spoons gives curious gourmands the opportunity to explore Omani cuisine through local ingredients and regional recipes, providing a direct connection between the farms nearby and the food served.

Beyond the landscape, the warmth of Omani hospitality remains central to every stay. Travellers can share aromatic coffee and dates with the property’s Omani hosts and Mountain Insiders, whose personal knowledge presents an introduction to the customs and stories of Al Jabal Al Akhdar.

“Over the past decade, our guests have discovered that Al Jabal Al Akhdar presents much more than a spectacular setting,” said Abdullatif Al Farsi, General Manager of Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort. “It is a place where ancient customs remain part of daily life, from the rose harvest and falaj irrigation to the villages and farms across the terraces. Our 10th anniversary gives travellers the opportunity to share this, while celebrating the people who make this mountain their home.”

A Decade Above Ordinary

To mark this momentous occasion, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar has created a special 10th Anniversary Escape, bringing together some of the experiences that have come to define a stay high in the Hajar Mountains.

The offer includes two nights in a One Bedroom Cliff Pool Villa, 10th anniversary welcome amenities and a commemorative gift. Guests can enjoy a daily signature three-course dinner for two at Bella Vista, as well as a 60-minute Signature Massage for two at Anantara Spa.

Toast the vistas from Diana’s Point with a sunset drink and learn about life across the locale in a complimentary guided Three Villages Walk. The stay also includes 10 complimentary pieces of laundry, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability, and a complimentary upgrade to the next room or villa category, also subject to availability.

The anniversary escape brings together the moments that have become synonymous with Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar: waking above the canyon, walking through ancient hamlets, discovering sustainably grown produce and finding quiet moments at the spa.

Ten years after opening, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar continues to deliver something few destinations can: the chance to enjoy contemporary luxury at high altitude where time-honoured practices remain part of everyday life.
