Mondelēz Thailand, BMA and Trash Lucky Celebrate the Fourth Year of “Trash Right” Recycling Program

Mondelēz International Thailand, in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Trash Lucky, announced the results of the fourth year of the Trash Right program, implemented during the 2025 academic year to encourage Thai children and youth to care for the environment through responsible waste management and recycling. By promoting proper waste separation at the source in line with circular economy principles, the initiative supports the BMA’s “Mai Te Ruam” (No Mixed Waste) campaign. Since launching in 2022, the program has collected over 16,400 kilograms of waste for recycling, extending responsible waste practices from schools to families and communities.

This year, honorary awards were presented to schools demonstrating outstanding waste separation performance. Watkubon (Wattanan U-thit) School received the first prize, followed by Wat Nimmanoradee School as first runner-up and Wat Samakkhi Sutthawat School as second runner-up. Certificates of recognition were also presented to all participating schools.

Mr. Sanon Wangsrangboon, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, shared that the BMA places strong importance on systematic waste management as part of sustainable urban development. The city’s approach focuses on reducing waste at the source while raising awareness among people of all ages about effective waste separation.

“Bangkok currently manages more than 9,000 tons of municipal solid waste each day, requiring an annual budget of approximately 7 billion baht for waste management. Reducing the overall volume of waste would help lower these costs and allow funds to be redirected toward other priorities such as education and public health. For this reason, we introduced the “Mai Te Ruam” project to promote waste separation at source, with a particular focus on separating food waste from general waste to reduce total waste volumes.

“Separating waste at the source in schools not only reduces the amount of waste requiring disposal, but also instils positive environmental awareness among young people-encouraging them to value resources and live responsibly. Trash Right complements the “Mai Te Ruam” initiative by instilling waste separation discipline among children, which can extend to their families and communities, helping ease the waste management burden for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.”

The Trash Right program therefore serves as an important mechanism in building environmental awareness among children and youth. The initiative helps students understand proper waste separation, increases opportunities for plastics to enter recycling systems efficiently, and lays the foundation for responsible citizenship toward society and the environment in the long term.

Mrs. Rinlita Srirojpinyo, Corporate & Government Affairs Lead at Mondelēz International (Thailand) said “In the 2025 academic year, a total of 12,519 students participated in the programme. Together, they helped sort 7,007 kilograms of waste for recycling and upcycling-exceeding the program’s target. Plastics waste accounted for 2,593 kilograms, or approximately 36 percent of the total.

“Collecting plastics packaging back into the recycling loop aligns with Mondelēz’s sustainability mission to advance sustainable packaging under a circular economy approach, with the aim to achieve 98% or more Packaging Designed to be Recyclable by 2030.”

This year, 13 schools participated in the programme: Watkubon (Wattanan U-thit) School, Wat Nimmanoradee School, Khlong Lum (Serithai Anusorn) School, Wat Bamrung Ruean School, Pichai Phatthana School, Wat Samakkhi Sutthawat School, Wat Bang Toei School, Narknarwaouptump School, Khlong Lam Chiak School (Wang Thong Bamrung), Surao Khlong Nueng School, Prapaswittaya School, Wat Bueng Thonglang School, and Wat Kamphaeng School.

Since 2022,  the Trash Right program has collected over 16,400 kilograms of waste for recycling. Of this amount, more than 5,000 kilograms is plastics waste. This is equivalent to reducing over 62 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, an amount that would require planting approximately 2,400 new trees to offset the carbon footprint.”

Mondelēz Thailand remains committed to supporting initiatives that create positive impact for children, youth, and the environment. Trash Right not only promotes learning about waste separation in schools but also contributes to more efficient waste management, reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills, and extends waste separation practices to households and communities-helping drive Bangkok toward becoming a greener city in a tangible way.
