Listerine® Strengthens Efforts to Promote Mouthwash Use in Thailand and Support Sustainable Oral Health Worldwide

Bangkok, 16 October 2025 – According to the 9th National Oral Health Report (2023) by the Bureau of Dental Public Health, Department of Health, 81% of working-age Thais suffer from gingivitis, while more than 83% have experienced tooth loss, averaging 3.5 teeth per person. These figures highlight oral health problems that remain insufficiently treated. The situation in Thailand mirrors global trends, where nearly half of the world’s population is affected by untreated oral health conditions, particularly tooth decay among children and adolescents, and gingivitis in adults caused by plaque buildup.
The Bureau of Dental Public Health recommends using fluoride mouthwash daily, alongside brushing with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day and flossing. These practices help remove plaque and debris from areas a toothbrush cannot reach, thereby reducing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. This is a critical supplement to the government’s promotion of basic preventive measures, such as reducing sugar intake and brushing with fluoride toothpaste. However, many individuals still neglect to clean between their teeth, allowing food particles and bacteria to accumulate along the gumline. These bacteria are the primary cause of tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. Therefore, raising public awareness and improving daily oral hygiene practices are essential to advancing oral health outcomes nationwide.
Ms. Chaweena Chitsomboon, Marketing Director of Listerine for Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, highlighted the brand’s commitment, stating, “With rapid advancements in technology, people have become significantly more aware of oral hygiene and are placing greater importance on it especially the regular use of mouthwash. However, oral health issues such as tooth decay, periodontal disease, and tooth discoloration remain ongoing challenges. This has led to a continuous rise in demand for effective oral care products.”
“In Thailand, Listerine® is committed to helping people achieve better oral health by encouraging mouthwash use as part of a complete oral care routine. Prevention is always more effective than treatment at later stages. Our goal is to shift public attitudes and help Thais recognize that early oral care, such as rinsing with Listerine® twice a day, can significantly reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. This marks an important step toward raising Thailand’s oral health standards to international levels.”
Listerine®, the world’s leading mouthwash brand, participated in the 2025 FDI World Dental Congress hosted by the FDI World Dental Federation in Shanghai, China, from September 9 to 12. During the event, the brand announced a collaboration with local and international oral health experts through a special seminar titled “Reevaluate Rinse for Periodontal Health: Translating Guidelines into Patient-Specific Care.” The initiative aims to enhance oral health literacy, reduce the risk of oral diseases, and support national public health objectives.
At the forum, Professor Maurizio S. Tonetti, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in the United Kingdom, presented the S3-Level clinical practice guideline for stages I-III periodontitis, developed by approximately 90 experts from 19 countries. He highlighted that plaque removal using mouthwash containing specific antibacterial agents serves as an effective adjunctive treatment for patients with gingivitis. Professor Tonetti also emphasized that proper management of gingivitis and timely treatment of periodontitis can help reduce the long-term costs of oral care.
Associate Professor Paula Matesanz at the Complutense University of Madrid, Vice-president of the Spanish Society of Periodontology, and Vice-President of the SEPA International Foundation, noted that effective control of gingivitis begins with plaque removal. She explained that mouthwashes containing specific antibacterial agents, such as essential oils, are recommended as adjunctive therapy for patients with periodontal disease to help manage gingivitis.
