Oriental Eyes joins force with Hong Kong’s Media Asia to Drive International Film Industry “My Best Bodyguard” as their 1st high-budget project starsShawn Yue
Oriental Eyes Co., Ltd., one of the new driving forces in Thailand’s film industry, announced its 2010 business plan in which its collaboration with Hong Kong’s internationally acclaimed Media Asia Group is highlighted. Under collaboration, the Media Asia Group will internationally distribute Oriental Eyes’s two films, 9 Wat (Secret Sunday), and the action-packed mega-film, My Best Bodyguard, which boats Hong Kong’s famous Shawn Yue, a strategy to hit the market nationally and internationally.
BANGKOK, The Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, 18 January 2010 – Watcharin Suthiprapa, Managing Director of Oriental Eyes Co., Ltd., on behalf of the producers of 9 Wat and My Best Bodyguard, announced that the Media Asia Group, one of Hong Kong’s leading distributors, would be an international distributor of these two Thai films, and unveiled Hong Kong-based famous Shawn Yue who also participated in My Best Bodyguard.
“According to our ‘Outside-in’ policy,” said Suthiprapa.“Oriental Eyes places an emphasis on our business ends both nationally and internationally. Thai films evidently contain cultural roots plus quality teamwork and international standards. We’d like to blend this strength of the East in our films and then let the world see. So we’ve been working in collaboration with our enormously potential partner to internationalise our films. Nevertheless, while our screenplay, cast and studios remain untouched as authentic Thai, demands both from outside and within are seriously taken into account in order to identify global market trends – Asia, Europe and America. As a new wave in the film industry, we’re required to boost and continue our business challengingly yet differently. Unlike others.”
“In 2010 it is seen that there’ll be some more space in a local market,” said Robert Li, the Marketing and Distribution Director of Oriental Eyes Co., Ltd. “It is thus hopeful that Thai films will enjoy its box office boost this year. An evolution. There will be more producers in the future. Now we have only ten-something producers. As a result, the Thai film industry will be hugely expanded.”
Li continued, “As a producer of My Best Bodyguard, the big action film in terms of both budget, authentic actions and international standards of production, Oriental Eyes has the team equipped with Hong Kong’s action cue designers and directors who are highly specialised and have worked in a large number of Hollywood films. Therefore, My Best Bodyguard is filled with authentic chasing/fighting scenes, which have not only quality but also safety for both cast and crew. Most special of all, we proudly present, in this film, Shawn Yue who has been internationally famous from Infernal Affairs 1, 2 and 3 and Initial D. Definitely, his presence in the film allows us to boost our presence and our marketing and distribution channels internationally.
“During the last few years several Thai films won box-office success in a global market, especially in Asia, Europe and America. All the films are of differences and uniqueness. As a producer and distributor, we need to propose a new idea for our audience. For example, our recent film, 9 Wat , is about faith and beliefs in Buddhism. The film follows a teenager, representing the young generation, who take an auspicious tour of nine temples and getting rid of karma and as nonsense. Apart from its horror excitement, the film’s attractions include those of fashion trends, the new generation, storytelling techniques and production quality.
Ricky Tse, Head of Distribution, the Media Asia Group, revealed why Media Asia had decided to distribute a Thai film for the first time, “As a film distribution company, Media Asia is open for all kinds of films from other countries besides Hong Kong. As Thai films are picking up in recent years in the local markets, some good quality Thai films should deserve a better chance for overseas exposure. We strongly believe that Oriental Eyes can produce decent films. That’s why we would rather start our Thai film business relationship with them.
“9 Wat is a horror film with some positive message in it, and horror films from Thailand are quite popular and appealing to the overseas audiences. My Best Bodyguard is a full action film, which is also very well received from the overseas markets. As we haven’t seen the whole film yet, at this stage it’s hard to assess the value for these two films. But Media Asia is quite confident for the distribution result. Besides Asia, some European and American markets are quite aware of Thai films. It depends on genre of the films, e.g. horror films will be more appealing to some European markets like the UK and Germany. Action-packed films will be more appealing to some Middle East countries, Eastern European countries as well as Latin American countries.”
When asked about a role of Thai films, he said, “A few years ago Thai films still focused on the local markets. In recent years Thai films are approaching to the international markets; some producers are now getting more familiar with the taste of the overseas audiences. 9 Wat, and My Best Bodyguard are the films targeting international markets but, at the same time, they have their own Thai style and flavour.”
Regarding the trend and opportunity for Thai films in the global market, he gave an opinion that, “They’re picking up in these few years as more and more distributors and audiences know about the Thai films and we are sure that the chance is good. Production quality is quite recognised by the international markets, together with good quality script and director, it’s not difficult to achieve above the international standard.”
