MILO, the leading Chocolate Malt Beverage that has been popular with Thai people for six decades, today reinforces its leadership in innovation by introducing a paper straw that will initially be used for two variants, which are MILO UHT 30% Less Sugar and MILO UHT No Sucrose. This is the first time a product in the UHT category in Thailand is using a paper straw. The innovative MILO paper straw is bendable and has no paper odor. It delivers the same great MILO taste and is environmentally-friendly as it’s made from 100% virgin paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
According to Mr. Victor Seah, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Nestle Indochina, “Tackling plastic waste is a major environmental challenge that the world faces today. It is also a responsibility that Nestle has made a priority, along with taking care of consumers’ health. Nestle continues to develop business practices to care for our planet and are good for our consumers, which reflects our purpose of enhancing quality of life and contributing to a healthier future.
“The introduction of this innovative bendable paper straw for MILO UHT is one of Nestle’s efforts to reduce the use of single-use plastic, which will help lead to a waste-free future. This initiative also reinforces Nestle’s global ambition to achieve 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2025 as well as meeting the needs of Thai consumers who are looking for more environmentally-friendly packaging. I am confident that the MILO paper straw will receive great feedback from Thai consumers,” he added.
Mr. Chaiyong Sakulborrirug, Business Executive Officer, Dairy and Adult Nutrition, Nestle (Thai) Ltd., said, “The MILO paper straw initiative is aligned with the Thai government’s 2018-2030 roadmap on plastic waste management. We are piloting the paper straw with our MILO 30% Less Sugar and MILO UHT No Sucrose variants and plan to expand the use of the paper straw to cover the entire MILO UHT product range by early 2021. With this change, we aim to eliminate the use of more than 100 million plastic straws by the end of 2021, which, if they were all placed end-to-end, is equivalent to 15,000 kilometers, or eight times the distance from Mae Sai to Betong.
“Our environmentally-friendly MILO paper straw uses FSC-certified paper, which means it’s made from renewable and sustainably-sourced material. Consumers can be assured that the MILO paper straw is safe and harmless as it is produced from 100% virgin paper and manufactured under the highest quality and safety standards. Among its innovative features, our paper straw is bendable. There is no paper odor, so no effect on the taste and quality of the product, which means MILO will continue to satisfy the needs of and delight consumers.”
Mr. Chaiyong added that, even though the MILO paper straw is decomposable, Nestle encourages consumers to push the paper straw back into the box after they have finishing drinking their MILO, rather than disposing of it separately. This will enable both the MILO paper straw and the product’s paper box to go through the recycling process together, another way to reduce the small waste that affects the environment.
MILO UHT 30% Less Sugar and MILO UHT No Sucrose with the new paper straw are available now at retail stores, convenience stores, supermarkets, and hypermarkets nationwide.
